  22. We appreciate all the feedback we are getting on the PsL Monthly CD. We are
  23. making suggested changes when we can.

  25. ---CD-ROM Too Cheap?

  28. "Congratulations on the CD-ROM. It is excellent, very well done. I only
  29. have one suggestion: I don't think you are charging enough for it. Not
  30. complaining, mind you, but anyone would be willing to pay a lot more for it
  31. than $20, and to be honest, I think you deserve more than that per copy."

  33. -PsL: The people who have been spending upwards of $1000 each month to get
  34. all the programs added to PsL are ecstatic with the new CD for $19.95, to
  35. say the least, and of course we are losing money on them.
  36.  
  37. At the same time, a lot of people have subscribed to the PsL CD who never
  38. bought from PsL before or who were not buying as much as $20/month from
  39. PsL.
  40.  
  41. It appears from the early response to the CD that we will easily get enough
  42. new people subscribing to more than offset the lost revenues from those who
  43. used to spend more, so everyone is coming out ahead, including the
  44. programmers, who will get their programs out to more people this way.
  45.  
  46. Aren't win-win situations wonderful?

  48.  
  49. ---CD-ROM Too Late?
  50.  
  51. Some people were concerned last month because they got PsL News before the
  52. CD.
  53.  
  54. We cannot finish the CD until after PsL News has gone to the printer. Then
  55. the tape for the first two CDs had to be sent to a plant where it took 10
  56. days to produce the CD and three days to ship back. That is why it is so
  57. much later than PsL News, which is printed locally.
  58.  
  59. In the future, we plan to pay extra for 3-day turn-around time for
  60. production (plus 3-4 days to-from the manufacturer), so you should receive
  61. it sooner, but still not as soon as PsL News.
  62.

  64. ---No Volume Label on the CD
  65.    Frederick R. Sidell also writes:

  67. "I could not catalog the CDs with a disk cataloging program (SmartCat)
  68. because they do not have volume labels. Please put a distinct volume label
  69. on each month's CD."
  70.  
  71. -PsL: We'll try to do that. Most disk cataloging programs let you manually
  72. enter a volume label if a disk does not have one. If SmartCat does not, you
  73. may want to look at some of the other programs in PsL. Also, look at
  74. CDPRO3D in the DOS\COM section this month.

  76. Alternatively, you might want to copy the FILES.BBS file out of each CD's
  77. root directory into a directory on your hard disk. (August did not have a
  78. FILES.BBS; instead, get FILES from the PSL_News directory for that month).
  79.  
  80. The FILES.BBS files have descriptions of all the programs, arranged by
  81. subdirectory. You can search these files with FGREP (from the Reviews
  82. directory) much faster than you could load and search with a catalog
  83. program, or you can view and search them with LIST or some other file
  84. viewer.

  87. ---PNUMER.ZIP Bad on September CD

  91. appreciate it if you would send me a CD without the corrupt file."

  93. -PsL: PNUMER.ZIP is bad on all the CDs (although it was good on our
  94. master). We will put it on the October CD again.

  96. ---Wants Programming CD

  99. "What I could really use is a CD which contains the disks from your
  100. programming section. Why yours? Because you have much more than any other
  101. company. Having a thorough and ORGANIZED source for programming utilities
  102. would be worth hundreds of dollars to me and other programmers. I pay $165
  103. yearly for my subscription to Microsoft Developers Network CD for
  104. information which is less useful to me than your programming catalog info.
  105. Think about it."

  107. -PsL: We are still trying to adjust to the shock of going from 250-300
  108. program write-ups a month to 500-700. As soon as we get our heads above
  109. water, we will definitely be tackling some other CD-ROM projects, and your
  110. wish is one of them. Thanks for the input.

  113. ---FILES.BBS Not Quite Right

  116. "Well, you almost got it right! File size must END at (ie: be
  117. right-justified to) column 21. The date must start at column 24 and end at
  118. column 31 with "-" as separators, not "/". The first line of the
  119. description must start at column 34 and not go beyond column 39. Long
  120. descriptions must start with "| " in column 32."

  122. -PsL: Whew! The specs keep getting tighter and tighter. We'll try these
  123. changes in this month's CD and see what objections we get. We hope to avoid
  124. multiple FILES.BBS files for different BBS systems, but we have been told a
  125. lot of different things.

  132. BBS at the same time, having some off-line and some on-line. It also
  133. controls multiple CDs such as Pioneer DRV or Corel SCSI for systems with
  134. more than one CD-ROM. To run ROMBRAIN, you will also need BRAINEX.

  195. addresses compressed onto two CDs: Western and Eastern U.S.

  219. We had fun testing the CDs by looking up distant relatives and old high
  220. school friends from 25+ years ago.

  223. whose names, addresses or phone numbers may be lacking or illegible, track
  224. down debtors, check for trademarked business names, get house numbers for a
  225. street, and so on.

  285. -----New User Tip: Redirection
  286.  
  287. Some Quick Look utilities on this month's CD-ROM have no documentation
  288. files. When you run the program the first time (with no command line
  289. parameters), the documentation is written to the screen and the program
  290. returns to DOS.
  291.  
  292. However, these programs have more than one screen full of documentation,
  293. and it scrolls off faster than you can read it.
  294.  
  295. If you are faced with a situation like this, one easy solution is to
  296. redirect the program's output to a text file. For example, if a program by
  297. the name of SOMEPROG.EXE writes several screens of text in a continuous
  298. stream, you can enter SOMEPROG > TEXT to capture it to a file named TEXT
  299. (or any other name you want to use).
  300.  
  301. Then you can use the VIEW.COM program which we put on most of our disks, as
  302. well as on the CD, to read the TEXT file. (When using redirection to create
  303. a file, be sure you are not using the name of a file already in the
  304. directory. DOS will overwrite an existing file without warning.)

  323. -PsL: Our practice now is to put small Quick Look programs onto Monthly
  324. Additions Disks, so if you see a Quick Look program written up in some area
  325. other than Monthly Additions Disks, it takes at least one disk by itself
  326. and the regular ($5/disk) fees apply. If one program takes more than one
  327. disk, we will say so and it will cost $6.99 for the set, just like MegaDisk
  328. sets in the library.

  331. ---Screen Colors & ANSI.SYS

  334. "In the June PsL News, you mentioned a problem in setting screen colors
  335. with ANSI.SYS. This is caused by an undocumented feature of DOS in all
  336. versions. It has to do with the way that AUTOEXEC.BAT handles ECHO ON and
  337. ECHO OFF.

  339. "To get bright white on blue on startup, simply load ANSI.SYS in your
  340. CONFIG.SYS file and add the following lines to your AUTOEXEC.BAT:

  349. -----Quick Looks
  350.  
  351. PsL receives a lot of programs which we do not add to our permanent
  352. collection for various reasons, although the programs may be of excellent
  353. quality.
  354.  
  355. These programs are written up as "Quick Looks" in PsL News and are included
  356. on PsL's Monthly CD.
  357.  
  358. Quick Look programs may be special ordered on floppies at our regular disk
  359. fees. We do not assign disk numbers to them, so they must be ordered by
  360. name and CD-ROM/PsL News date. All Quick Look Programs not part of an
  361. Additions Disk come on separate disks. Quick Looks taking more than one
  362. disk are noted and the cost for them is $6.99 per program/disk set. Some
  363. say "On MegaDisk only" -- these are available only on 1.44MB 3.5" disk for
  364. $6.99 (or on the CD, of course).
  365.  
  366. Some of the types of programs that will be classified as Quick Looks
  367. include programs of a type already in PsL such as text editors, periodical
  368. programs with a limited life span such as magazines-on-disk, demo programs,
  369. extreme niche programs, and files too large to justify distributing on
  370. diskettes.

  375. Throughout the program reviews in this issue, you will see PCX file names
  376. in angled brackets. These are primarily for use with TOGETHER! when reading
  377. the PsL News on CD. TOGETHER! is a shareware program included on the CD
  378. with the permission of the author for distribution purposes. If you use the
  379. program on a continuing basis, payment of the shareware fee to the author
  380. is required. See the file TOGETHER.DOC in the \SCREENS directory of the CD
  381. for more information.

  391. PsL has, by far, the largest shareware library of any disk-based
  392. distributor. Because of the large volume of programs, full writeups of
  393. every program cannot be included in each PsL News.

  395. Programs being updated in this issue are only given a one- or two-line
  396. description. (When viewing PsL News on the CD-ROM, press "W" for the
  397. original write-up of an updated program.) The Listing in the back of this
  398. issue is a list with one-line description of most, but not all, programs in
  399. PsL's catalog.

  401. For a complete listing of all the programs in PsL, with full descriptions,
  402. system requirements, shareware fees, author's name, etc., get the PsL
  403. Reviews Disks. (See the back, inside cover of this issue for details.)

  405. The latest revisions of the Reviews files are also included in the \REVIEWS
  406. directory of the PsL Monthly CD-ROM each month, along with programs for
  407. viewing and searching the files.

  409. Text of past issues of PsL News are available on disk, as well as on the
  410. PsL Monthly CD (beginning with August). To find programs written up as
  411. Quick Looks and not added to PsL's catalog, search the past PsL News text
  412. files.

  415. -----MegaDisk Sets:
  416.  
  417. Disks with a 20000 series number are part of a multi-disk set of related
  418. programs for a total disk fee of just $6.99. Because of the already low
  419. price of MegaDisk Sets, these sets do not apply towards member's quantity
  420. discounts nor can sets be taken as "free disks" in any special offers.

  423. -----System Requirements:
  424.  
  425. Absent any notice to the contrary in the full program descriptions, all
  426. programs should run on a system with at least 384k of RAM, any type of
  427. video, and at least two drives (one floppy and a hard disk or two floppies)
  428. and DOS 3.1 or later. However, PsL does not warrant compatibility of
  429. programs with all systems.
